As a company committed to innovation, Egis is dedicated to talent management and to the support of talented young scientists on their career path. This was the third year that the one-year-long fellowship, which also includes considerable financial support for research, was announced for students of Hevesy György PhD School of Chemistry.

This year the prestigious award was won by Fruzsina Bencs, whose area of research is the ‘twisted’, so-called ’amyloid’ proteins, as well as the fibers formed by their adhesion and congestion. These fibers and structures accumulate so much over time that they stretch the cellular environment. The process, which is still unknown in many details, is responsible for several diseases of the central nervous system, such as Alzheimer's disease. The research of Fruzsina Bencs can contribute to the understanding of the formation of such ‘twists’, plaques.

‘At the evaluation of applications, a complex system of criteria applies. I primarily consider the competence of participants based on their professional background, publications, and results in academic competitions. In addition, the professional work of their supervisors and their lists of publications are also taken into account, but it is also evaluated how up-to-date the topic is and whether it aligns with the activities of Egis.

Finally, I find it also important how realistic the professional goals of the applicant are, and if these goals are feasible within the 4 years of PhD studies - said dr. Balázs Volk, Director of Drug Substance Development. - Research on this field can contribute to the understanding and treatment of diseases that affect a significant proportion of humanity but are still without sufficient therapeutic solutions. This is an up-to-date research of great importance, to the success of which Egis aims at contributing with its fellowship program. After all, our mission is to help people to live a long and healthy life.’

Fruzsina Bencs said that the field of healing had preoccupied her from a young age. “When this interest was combined with the love of chemistry, I knew I wanted to dedicate my future to drug research. In the course of my doctoral work, my goal is to unravel and better understand the basics of neurodegenerative diseases, which are still incurable today.

‘Egis Excellence Fellowship gives me the opportunity to attend scientific conferences, the support helps me to publish my results and obtain additional materials for my research, as well as to work in a favorable environment.’ The doctoral student intends to find a job in the pharmaceutical industry in the future and wishes to participate in drug development. ‘The scholarship contributes greatly to the achievement of this goal. I would like to thank Egis Pharmaceuticals Ltd. for its support and for trusting in my work!’ Congratulations to Fruzsina Bencs!
