Last year, our company joined the kestrel protection programme of the Őrség National Park. As a company committed to nature conservation, and engaged in production activities in the region, Egis also supported the "Give a Kestrel Family a Home" initiative.

The initiative helps to increase the population of the common kestrel, one of our smallest birds of prey, by installing nest boxes - the common kestrel does not build a nest, it usually occupies other birds’ twig nests. Although kestrels will probably not settle down in areas with intensive agricultural activities and where only a few tall trees with a large canopy suitable for twig nests have been left, they happily occupy artificial nest boxes. Research has shown that their presence, like that of most predators, has a positive controlling effect on the rodent population.

In the framework of the project, staff members of Őrség National Park have erected almost two hundred and fifty nest boxes in the region. Forty boxes were occupied last year, while this year more than sixty nest boxes have been taken by kestrel families. Several of the permanent artificial nests made and erected with the support of Egis have also found some tenants: while in 2020 only the artificial nest in Egyházasrádóc was occupied, kestrels also bred in the nest boxes in Rönök and Szentgotthárd this year.

It is said that a single nest box can serve as a home for birds for up to twenty-five years; thus our company’s support contributes to the long-term maintenance of biodiversity in the region and the reduction of environmental pollution.
