Escape room and board game – some of the winners of Egis’ chemistry-focused competition

How do you make young teens (12-13 years old) who have just started learning chemistry interested in the subject? At this age, how can you make them see the opportunities chemistry can offer? Egis Pharmaceuticals PLC has announced a competition in search for ideas that can answer these questions.

We announced the competition in cooperation with some of our partners: with four universities, the cofounders of the Colourful chemistry platform and the Charitable Foundation for Natural Sciences Education in Memoriam Szabó Szabolcs. The call was sent out to teachers in higher and public education as well as to students in vocational training. We looked for entries describing ideas that can be implemented beyond the classrooms.
Based on the judges’ decision, from the thirty-eight entries the grand prize went to Research of Dr Egis, a chemistry-themed escape room concept by Adrienn Verba. While the young players are finding their way out of the escape room, they can experience the joy of experimenting and exploring things. If an online version is developed, the game can be played online as well.
Zsófia Szabó’s concept also won an award. In a fun way and by using examples from our daily life, the board game teaches youngsters and adults about chemistry, even if they are not so much into this branch of science. The game also touches upon topics such as environmental protection or ecology, what's more, sayings and proverbs also enrich the scientific learning.
The concept of an online escape room earned the recognition of the jury as well. Bettina Árva combines playful online exercises with simple experiments that can be carried out at home.
Congratulations!
